We probably know how hooked we are with our regular caffeine fix. How our day turns to shit if we skip our daily routine of our coffee. But have you even considered that you might be on your way to a disease. YES, you heard me correctly! We are becoming so obsessed with Caffeine that now it is considered a source of mental disorder. Surprised right? I was too when I first got to know that.
As of May 2013, the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists caffeine withdrawal as a mental-health disorder. The symptoms of having these withdrawals are headache, sleepiness, irritability, Insomnia, Lack of Concentration and many more. These are the things we already know. Apart from these, the main thing to really consider is how bigger problem it is. Yes, drinking too much coffee sucks and having post-coffee sucks too. Though the question arises here is what is more important: addiction or our mental health? For some it may not be caffeine fix. Yet there are some of us who can’t function without caffeine in life. Presently, we might get our work done with a little help. However, in future no one can guarantee good health (mental & physical both) because of this habit in our lifestyle.
The DSM-5, along with several mental health professionals, is trying to build awareness regarding the growth of mental disorders in the society. It now depends on us when do we need to continue and when do we need to stop. Normally, 300-400mg (therefore, making 50-100 ordinary cups of coffee) caffeine can be consumed on regular basis considering the coffee beans and its way of preparation, without having adverse effects. So, you may now chill but keep in mind, all it takes is more than 1-2g of caffeine for overdose depending upon your caffeine tolerance.
It is upto you whether you want to live a little longer by limiting your coffee consumption or suffer following an early death!
