The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had passed a notification on November 2nd stating that all new four wheelers sold post December 1, 2017 to be fitted with FASTags.
FASTag is a service provided by the National Highways Authority Of India (NHAI), that enables cashless electronic payment of toll fees at all toll gates that come under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme across the country so you won’t stuck in jams on tolls. FASTag has a validity of five years amd after purchasing it, one only needs to recharge/top up as per the requirement.

The picture below shows how this works and helps in payment electronically.
The FASTag works with the help of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology that enables cashless payment at the toll-plaza. It is a sticker that is fitted on the vehicle’s windshield by authorized dealers.
Once purchased It will be valid for a period of 5 years and the user can recharge the FASTag from Point of Sale (POS) that is available at all Toll Plazas supporting this. It also supports SMS updates for Usage Records and Low Balance.
So no more long queues at the Toll Gates.
The ministry also stated that all Highway Chassis sold vehicles with no provision of a Windshield, will have to get one installed on the windshield by an authorized dealer before the registration of the vehicle with the RTO.
There are approximately 240 Toll Plazas supporting The Technology at the moment with more planned to be included in the list. This comes as another addition to the government’s digitization drive.
