Reliance Jio has is reported to partner with Google to manufacture a low-cost 4G VoLTE smartphone that will work only on the Reliance Jio or Reliance telecom network. The phone will be launched by the year-end, reports The Hindu Business Line.
Reliance Jio and Google are yet to confirm the news. It could definitely mean a complete turnaround for the Indian feature phone industry too. Reportedly, the new Jio-
Google phone will be exclusive to the Jio network (a CDMA 4G phone, Jio) and will have a host of other benefits apart from the standard benefits extended to Jio subscribers.
Google will be responsible for the marketing of the device while Reliance will handle the production.
According to the report in Business Line, Sanchit Gogia, CEO at Greyhound Research said, “Such a smartphone will help Rjio increase data adoption — helping it render movies and music better over its network. It will also improve the overall quality of service delivered on the Jio network.
“For Google, this would mean access to a large number of new users who would be connecting to the internet for the first time. It may also help the company assess its low-cost handset strategy,” he said.
It’s unclear if it will be an Android One branded device or not, as there simply aren’t that many details to go on at this time. The rumor talks about this mystery smartphone working exclusively on the Reliance Jio wireless network though. It also claims that Google and Reliance Jio are working on making the wireless provider’s own applications “tightly integrated” into the Android platform. This could result in a smartphone with a better user experience and that could entice even more customers onto their network.
Google helping Jio with Smart TV
The Hindu reports that “industry sources” have noted that the two companies have been in cahoots for quite some time, even collaborating on software for Jio’s smart TV services, which are also slated to launch later in 2017.
